One Band, One Sound – The Essence teamwork


I was geeked! As I sat in a dark theater sipping my Coca-Cola and munching on my buttered popcorn, I found the voltage flowing through me as I waited for the show at the 20th Century Fox movie “Drumline”. I sat back in my seat and was swept away by the sounds, moves and competition in the film. I enjoyed stress-free and fun afternoon watching Nick Cannon, Orlando Jones, Leonard Roberts, Zoe Saldana, Jason Weaver and Anthony J. Brown show what life is like for a child “who marches in step with their own drum” fit into the environment he must march in the same rhythm and his team.

It took a moment for Nick Cannon connect “one band, one sound” philosophy of his brass band. As a matter of fact, it was his character to be removed from the brass band before he realized that the essence of “one band, one sound” philosophy was really all about teamwork.

I got a big kick out of that movie! It was a feel good image that not only entertained, even taught some great lessons too. I walked away from “Drumline” internalizing “one band, one sound” philosophy. It made such an impact on me that I recorded it in my diary back in 2005 and now I am concentrating on my article about it today.

“One band, one sound” was a clever way to show us all of the importance and benefits of teamwork. It can be applied to any and all situations where teamwork is essential in our lives.

“One band, one sound” reminds us that teamwork is the idea of ​​people working together in cooperation to achieve the desired objectives.

“One band, one sound” describes the importance of the following properties that need to be present for teamwork to operate successfully, such as:

1) Vision

2) communication

3) listening

4) Initiative

5) Support

6) Focus

7) Trust

8) Collaboration

9) Respect

Vision is needed in order to move our team where they are to where we want them to be. Understanding of our vision, business or project helps us to shift into gear and complete the required tasks us to express our dreams a reality.

Communication skills allow our teams to provide information that is easily received and understood. Share ideas, providing opinions and give feedback gives us the opportunity to bring our message so that it is clearly fights fellow our members.

listeners is important because they allow us to show genuine interest in what is communicated. Whether to notify, update, teach, demonstrate, or recognize, listening skills actively us to our team that in turn helps us to be more connected vision of the team.

Initiative is the energy that moves the team forward and allow the strengths and skills of individual team members to realize that the team as a whole. Support provides help our team members give each other which helps to build a bond within our team. Focus is necessary to optimize the energy and effort that members have a perfect view of our mission or business.

Trust allows team members to release inhibitions and openly communicate with one another. It is the motivation behind teams remain in one. Collaboration joins our team members with each other for a common goal. When trust and vision are present, cooperation connects us to produce positive results for the team.

honor our team through the challenges and conflicts. It gives us “an objective, unbiased consideration and regard for the rights, values, attitudes and property” Our team members. No matter if there are personality conflicts or time challenges, respect for each other and our goal team helps us to be “one band, one sound.”

Susan M. Heathfield, human resources with the author states that “teamwork is something that you do every single day.”

I agree. What we must consider is that not only are the above characteristics necessary for effective teamwork and not only are we doing teamwork day; But we must remember to keep the “one band, one sound” philosophy by

o Provide on-going training to teach our teams systematic approaches to expending energy on tasks, task or duty;

o Hold regular team meetings to review the progress of our projects;

o Keep the fun events as well as business meetings as a way to promote positive connections freeze such an obligation to our members; and

o celebrating the success of our team in public – for others to know and see.

It is not easy to work with those who are different from you, especially when there are personality conflicts. As was shown in the movie “Drumline”, personality can play a part in keeping the team members apart. Yet, these differences can also serve as a hidden power teamwork.

Just keep in mind, even though personality may clash and the differences may be, so long as the vision, communication skills, listening skills, initiative, support, focus, trust, cooperation and respect are present, team members will be ” one band, one sound. ”
